YOUR NEXT AUTUMN ESCAPE!

Rich in natural splendor and artisanal fare, the storied Catskill Mountains, in the US, now have a sophisticated luxury retreat that perfectly embraces this serene wonderland.

Scribner’s took a late-modernist motor lodge and transformed it into a contemporary yet historically relevant retreat. Here, one still finds a brick road where long-ago visitors used to unload their cars. Set on the side of a mountain with sweeping views, the lodge and its 23-acre site, less than a mile from Hunter Mountain, gleam with new splendor after thorough renovations under the direction of Brooklyn-based Post Company.

Located between Albany and New York City is 700,000 acres of beautiful mountain scenery of the Catskill Park. The park is mostly New York state-managed forest preserve within the Catskill Mountains that sits west of the Hudson River and contains more than 30 peaks above 3,500 feet. It was settled by the Dutch and was used early on as a rural escape for the first vacationers out of New York City.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, member of Design Hotels, was founded to welcome a new generation of urban explorers to the beautiful year-round destination of the Catskills. With thoughtful design, friendly service, and delicious food and drinks, the Lodge is the perfect basecamp for your escape to the outdoors.

Since the 1800s, city-dwellers have been escaping to the Catskill Mountains for the fresh air and commanding views. On this site in 1881, the Hunter Mountain Prospect House was built, a grand hotel that could sleep hundreds, and had a reputation as a popular summer social center. As steamboat travel fell out of favor, travelers went elsewhere, and the Prospect House was lost to time.

In the 1960s a new wave swept over the area. In January 1960, Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl opened and attracted a lively crowd to the slopes for winter sports and aprés-ski revelry. In the summer of 1969, 400,000 people gathered together at Woodstock in the Catskill Mountains for the pivotal event of the countercultural revolution.

Around this time, an eccentric artist acquired the Scribner’s site with a vision to create a fantastical resort that captured the optimism and playfulness of that era. In 1966, the Scribner Hollow Motor Lodge welcomed its first guests. Known for its distinctive architecture, and decadent indoor swimming “grotto”, the Lodge quickly gained legendary status.
